State Hornet Staff

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The State Hornet Publications Board announced its process Friday for selecting the 2008-09 editor in chief of The State Hornet, Sacramento State’s student-run newspaper. Candidates’ applications are due April 9, and the board will select the editor in chief at its April 25 meeting.

The ideal applicant will have an excellent track record as both a staffer and an editor at a campus newspaper, proven leadership qualities, a working knowledge of media law and time to devote him- or herself fully to the task for the entire 2008-09 school year.

Deadline to apply: 5 p.m. Wednesday April 9. Applications are available at The State Hornet, located on the second floor of the University Union, or you may download the application here. You may return the application in person or by email to Faculty Adviser Holly Heyser.

Exam: There is a take-home exam for all applicants. It will be distributed after all applications have been received, and must be returned and completed to Faculty Adviser Holly Heyser by 5 p.m. Monday April 21.

Presentations to staff: Editor in chief candidates will be asked to make presentations to the entire staff of The State Hornet during class meetings (3-4:15 p.m.) on Tuesday April 15 and Thursday April 17. Time allowed for presentations will depend on the number of candidates, but should be no less than 15 minutes. The staff will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and submit comments about the candidates.

Interviews: A committee of the Publications Board will interview candidates individually on Wednesday April 23. The committee will include current adviser and Publications Board Chairwoman Holly Heyser, a full-time member of the journalism faculty (TBA), Editor in Chief Gamaliel Ortiz, former editor in chief Nate Miller, and Publications Board members Jacqueline Tualla and Sam Cadeaux-Tydings. The committee will recommend two finalists to the Publications Board. If there is no more than one candidate for the position, this portion of the process may be waived, subject to the discretion of the Publications Board chair.

Decision: The finalists will make brief presentations to the full Publications Board Friday, April 25, and the Publications Board will have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates. The board will then select the editor in chief.
