Power at Sacramento State and surrounding areas was out for 39 minutes today because of downed trees at a Pocket substation, said SMUD Public Information Specialist Dace Udris.

The outage began at 12:16 p.m. and lasted until 12:55 p.m.

Udris said troubleshooters are on site and were able to reroute power to everyone affected. They are currently working to remove the trees from the lines.

Two separate outages caused the loss in power, which affected a total of 14,000 Sacramento residents. The first affected the Valley High and Center Parkway areas, which included 165 people. The second, larger outage affected the Sacramento Executive Airport, Arden Park area, Fair Oaks and other areas.

Udris said the areas affected are “not a nice, neat square.”

Students in the University Union booed when the lights went off, then cheered when they flickered on for a moment.

“(Community service officers) said it is campus-wide. The library is also out,” Steve Forseth, University Union custodial services manager, said during the outage.

“We are keeping an eye on all the bathrooms, but everything is still open,” University Union Event Services Manager Rebecca Dietzler said.

The outage also affected students studying.

“It’s a little frustrating,” Kayleigh Wallace said. She was watching a friend’s belongings and couldn’t leave to do anything else.
