October 14, 2007
Both the women’s and men’s Sacramento State cross country teams competed Saturday in Santa Clara, with the women finishing first and the men finishing fourth at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. The women’s team was led by five hornets all finishing within 14 seconds of each other. Erin Wachter finished first on the team and finished third overall with a time of 19 minutes, besting fellow Hornet Mary Wagner by three seconds. The women took home the Open Division title, finishing with a score of 25, besting George Fox University by 26 points (51).
San Jose State (56), Westmont (115), Modesto junior college (136), and Sonoma State (142), rounded out the rest of the field. The men’s team was able to produce a fourth place showing in the 17-team invitational division. Junior Colin Szehner and senior Jeffery Paneda finished two seconds apart with times of 25:10 and 25:12, respectively. The marks were good enough for 12th and 13th place in the 158-man event. Long Beach State took the top honors in the men’s event, with a team score of 85, followed by Loyola Marymount. Sac State placed fourth with a score of 139. Next up for the Hornet cross country teams will be the Big Sky Conference Championship in Missoula, Mont., on Oct 27.
