Hornets football shutout against New Mexico
September 22, 2007
In what could be considered a drubbing at best, the Hornets lost to the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday in Albuquerque, 58-0.
Lobos running back Rodney Ferguson ran wild with 18 carries for 129 yards and four touchdowns en route to handing Sacramento State its third straight road-loss of the season.
Freshman quarterback Jason Smith injured the pinky on his throwing hand in the second quarter and did not return.
Smith was replaced by freshman QB Duncan White. The Hornets only tallied 104 yards of total offense, with a meager 27 yards in the air.
The Hornets were able to manage only six first downs all night – two of which were made by linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo, who got some snaps at running back.
The Lobos dominated every category on the field, racking up 499 yards for the game. New Mexico had an especially balanced attack, rushing for 232 yards and passing for 267 more.
Linebacker Mike Brannon had nine tackles and a sack to lead the Hornet defense. Defensive back Brent Webber also totaled nine tackles, while senior defensive back Brett Shelton chipped in with eight.
The Lobos are the last Division 1-A opponent the Hornets will play this season.
The loss puts the Hornets at 0-3 overall, and 0-1 going into the first home game of the season Saturday against Big Sky opponent Northern Arizona.
