Championship Sunday

It was quite a day for Sacramento State athletics on Sunday as four different teams wrapped up conference championship victories.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams as well as men’s golf and women’s rowing all took care of business in the finale of each team’s conference final.

The top-seeded men’s tennis team, which won its sixth title in 10 years and first since 2003, cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over No. 2 seed Eastern Washington early Sunday.

Just a few hours later the women wrapped up their sixth consecutive Big Sky championship 4-0 over the No. 2 seeded Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. The Hornets stretched their conference winning streak to a staggering 42 straight in the process.

The men’s golf team captured its first ever Div. I Independent Golf Championship, lead by freshman Grant Norton’s school-record 209 over the three day event. The team also fell just three strokes short of a team-record for a 54-hole event with an 863. Utah Valley State finished 11 strokes back and took second place.

The women’s rowing team took home its second straight WIRA team points trophy after the six competing Sac State boats finished in the top five of each entered race. The novice four boat took home the team’s best finish with a second place showing.

The four teams that won on Sunday join four other Sac State teams that have already won conference titles this year. Volleyball, gymnastics, men’s indoor track and women’s golf clinched conference titles earlier this year.
