ASI to seek improvement
August 29, 2001
Fellow Hornets,
Last semester, you bestowed upon me the privilege of being President of Associated Students, Inc. As your selection for this office, I feel a deep duty to raise the standard level of student advocacy and campus-wide participation. No longer shall students feel disenfranchised from the University. Your voice will be heard through this year?s administration. Your demonstration of trust and faith in my ability to adequately represent you will be matched by me with equal vigor, as I fight for your rights as a Sac State student.
Despite the run of the Vision slate, it is my contention that assembling the best possible talent for ASI, committed to student service, is the only method of ensuring each student of this campus is represented. For that reason, I have acquired the services of two candidates from opposing slates, Brandon Kline and Kevin Greene.
California State Student Association Representative Kline is one of the first presidential appointments. A mature sophomore, Kline seeks to continue our campus tradition of leadership within CSSA. This year, he has stepped up and obtained the chairmanship of the Legislative Affairs Committee. The Legislative Affairs committee is responsible for setting the political agenda for the Statewide Association. By overseeing this Committee, Chairman Kline will see to it that Sac State will be represented at the state, as well as the local level.
ASI?s first Chief of Staff, Greene is responsible for holding together the university organization of student advocacy on this campus. Greene is responsible for every component of ASI?s in-home operations. His duties relate to the bridging of historically internal structural gaps within ASI. Pushing 50-plus hours in the ASI government office, Greene has been instrumental in the organizational strides this administration has put together thus far.
The first ever Press Secretary, Janus Norman is commissioned to keep the student body well informed with the latest happenings on this campus. Norman is the right individual to address that need. More importantly, I personally feel that your ASI has become far too removed from the public it is intended to serve. Secretary Norman?s primary duty is to narrow the distance between students and their representatives, as well as to address the continuous need for adequate information distribution.
Beyond the new job classifications, this administration has been extremely diligent over the summer, accomplishing several remarkable feats. Within the first three months of my administration, we have accomplished more “first-evers” than any other ASI executive committee in years. Your dedicated officers were the “first ever” to: meet with the presidential cabinet of this university; coordinate a comprehensive meeting between executive officers and every ASI program; fill student positions on the University Committee prior to the fall semester; have executive officers attend a national conference on higher education retention; conduct an ASI Board of Directors orientation, and possess a projected overflow in ASI participation.
The accomplishments of this administration will continue as the year unfolds. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your student elected President. I am deeply moved and humbled at your faith in me to re-establish ASI?s commitment to making it easier for students to be students!
