The Long Beach music scene claims that it has its very own “Best Kept Secret.” Since the age of 12, this youthful artist has been known to deliver flawless flows in the rap game. Now, at age 20, Perfec has chosen to take the same road that was taken by fellow Long Beach rapper, Snoop Dogg.

Perfec’s album, entitled “Best Kept Secret,” is characteristic of many mainstream West Coast rap albums. The glamorization of sex, drugs and alcohol is evident throughout this arrangement of funky, laid back beats.

Previous rap artists have already played out most of Perfec’s lyrics. Maybe it’s because his affiliations are tied to many other West Coast artists, and they have influenced him. But even so, with a name like “Perfec,” which was shortened from “Perfection,” he could?ve came up with more originality to make his lyrics reflect his name.

We’ve already heard about “my homies and my hoes” and how “your body is bangin’.” We’ve also heard about ” hittin’ the clubs” and ” smokin’ bud with the Hennesey.” These lyrics are old and expected, and the tracks on this album are loaded with similar rhymes.

Perfec raps smoothly with ease, but his choice of topics is immature. Once in a while, however, he would throw in something original that shows some hope for his talent.

On one track, titled “Hold On,” Perfec manages to break away from the street life lyrical attitude and addresses the idea of holding “on to whatever you got…whether it’s sports, music, art – hold onto it. Things are gonna get better.” Simply Red’s song “Holding Back the Years” was the inspiration for this track, which also includes the original chorus.

In another track titled ” Da Enemy,” Perfec comes through with a strong lyrical verse, “Cataclystic explosions occur in your dome when I’m flowin’, you better believe it like you know me.”

Throughout the album, most of the tracks carry a steady beat with at least one melody. The music alone was decent, which helped carry the lyrics from beginning to end. But, the music was not enough to make up for the played out lyrics.

This “Best Kept Secret” is scheduled for release on May 1. If you like hearing about drugs, sex, and alcohol, this album is the “perfec” treat.
