Peak Adventures offers plenty of resources
November 27, 2000
An untapped resource has been found on the campus of Sacramento State in the form of Peak Adventures.
When some Sac State students were asked if they knew about this hidden goldmine, the majority of responses were in the affirmative.
However, although many had heard of Peak Adventures, but none of them had ever utilized it. Most of them said that there wasn’t enough information on it out there.
“The flyers are an old-fashioned way [of advertising] and we’re not very sure on how effective they are,” Jael Barnoske, Director of Peak Adventures said about their marketing techniques. “We are trying to achieve contact with the dorms in order to get our name out there. The dorms have been an under-utilized resource for us.”
Barnoske has predicted that the marketing efforts will get stronger. “There has been a change in staffing over the last year and we will be really trying to get involved more in the new student orientation. Hopefully making Peak Adventures a super success,” she said.
When Peak Adventures first started in the ’70s, it didn’t even have a name. Its founders, John Clinton and John White, knew of the need that students had for a tool co-op, but the idea was not well received by the administration. One week when the president was on vacation, Clinton and White brought in everything that was needed for the co-op and set up shop. It was such a success with the student body that when the president returned, he just couldn’t shut it down.
The tool co-op evolved into a bike shop, which stayed in existence until the idea to start offering outdoor trips and rentals for students at a discounted price was brought up. From that idea came today’s Peak Adventures.
Some of its services include equipment rentals, day and overnight trips, bike repair, and the challenge course.
“The challenge course is a big success for us. It brings a lot of people to our campus that wouldn’t normally be here, including corporate businesses, high school and elementary students, as well as the general public. You can even find us in the yellow pages under ‘ropes course’,” Barnoske said.
Peak Adventures offers “open course” days on the ropes course where students can pay a small fee and engage in a day full of challenges and self-discovery.
With the ski season fast approaching, many students can take advantage of Peak Adventures by renting their from them. They have snowboards, boots, snowshoes, and cross-country skis. Their most popular rentals are the snowboards and boots. These can be rented at the price of $35 four days.
Another resource that students can enjoy during the snow season are discounted lift tickets.
There are also many trips offered by Peak Adventures. Some of these include Winter Backpacking 101, Full Moon Snowshoe Hike, and Learn to Ski/Snowboard.
For those who know how to ski and/or snowboard, and want to try out their skill, they can take the snow shuttle that is offered for $14.
