D.C. or bust.

Let me take a minute to explain my master plan behind the photo you see above.

I knew that soon we’d be asking all our friends and family for money to help us get to Washington, D.C.  for the The Associated Collegiate Press’ National College Media Convention and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Bob Woodward, a legend in our field.

I made sure to tell the editorial staff to dress to the nines for a group photo. People needed to know how professional we were and how worthy we were to travel across the country to pursue our dreams and further our careers.

Well a few things happened on the day of this photoshoot. I slept slightly past the crack of dawn through my overly ambitious alarm to get to campus to distribute the semester’s fourth issue of The Hornet. Sac State’s Black Student Union held a protest in the Library Quad, with University President Robert Nelsen in attendance. We had a lively in-class discussion to brainstorm story ideas.

After class, we marched back to the newsroom to take a boss looking photo.

And then shenanigans ensued.

I hope the fact that we are friends as well as editors won’t distract you from amazing work we’ve done. I wanted a photo that was representative of the quality and professionalism of the work we’ve done so far this semester, but I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this photoshoot.

I believe our work speaks for itself. You can see all of it on www.statehornet.com

But we still have room to grow.

The ACP conference will be an incredible opportunity to network and meet people who may help us in our careers down the line, but there are also a variety of workshops that will help us grow as a student-run newspaper this year. We will bring home wisdom from this conference and pass it along to our entire team of writers, photographers and designers.

For those of you unfamiliar with ACP, it is the largest and oldest national organization for college student media. According to the ACP website, its mission is to “advance journalism and media as a vital cultural force by connecting advisers, students and professionals through national events and competitions.”

The fact of the matter is that there isn’t room in The State Hornet budget to fly a delegation of students across the country for this conference. I know our goal is steep, but we want to send a group of eight editors to this conference. We are still in the process of finding out who is able to take time off to attend that weekend, but just know that sending group of eight will not only benefit the students who attend, but also everyone on The State Hornet and all the students at Sac State who deserve the best student-run newspaper.
