Sac State Says – Smoking policy

California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill last week that would have banned smoking on California State University and community college campuses, arguing that colleges “already have the authority” to set their own smoking policies. We asked students their thoughts on what smoking policy Sacramento State should adopt. For The Hornet’s opinion, check out this week’s editorial.

    Alsalem
“I think the policy right now is alright – that people shouldn’t smoke near buildings, like there is specific places where you can smoke, and honestly I’m fine with that.” – Mohammed Alsalem, computer engineering.
    Gonzalez
“I’d rather not have students smoking around me … However, everybody has their free will and should be able to do what they want. And if it is a stress reliever for students, and they feel like smoking helps them in any way, who am I to tell them to stop?” – Yajayra Gonzalez, government journalism.
    Mattox
“I think Sac State’s policy should be a smoke-free campus, because smoke does irreparable damage to the body.” – Ashton Mattox, biology.
    McColley
“As long as you’re not smoking in the middle of groups, I think it’s fine … it’s fine if you’re off to the side in different areas.” – Tyler McColley, business.
    wantz
“I think if they created certain smoking areas, I wouldn’t have a problem with that, it would make it a lot more clear where one is supposed to go. That being said, I would hope it’s not way in the boonies somewhere.” – Nick Wantz, computer science.
