Staff Picks: Secretly loved songs

McClatchy Tribune

Song: “The Story of My Life”

Artist: One Direction

Album: “Midnight Memories”

Genre: Pop? Boyband? Crap?

Steven says: Is it a guilty pleasure if I don’t feel guilty about it? Because I love this song and I don’t care who knows! From the soft strumming of the acoustic guitars during the verses to the harmonized boy-band brilliance of the chorus, this song is as infectious as pop gets. Maybe I do feel a little weird when I get caught singing this in the car by someone who is obviously listening to the same station, but that is the story of my life.

Song: “FU”

Artist: Miley Cyrus Feat. French Montana

Album: “Bangerz”

Genre: Pop

Wendy says: Although I usually don’t have a problem admitting to the music I like, the Bangerz album makes me feel kind of ashamed. But I can’t help it because it’s amazing! FU is catchy, fun and an anthem to all those suckers who tried making fools of us. The lyrics are punchlines and I can’t stop singing. “I got two letters for you One of them is F And the other one is U.”

Song: “Men In Black”

Artist: Will Smith Feat. Coko

Album: “Big Willie Style” and “Men In Black: The Album”

Genre: Hip Hop, R&B

Anisca says: Every single time this song plays on my iPod I automatically pump up the volume. Most people only remember Will Smith as the Fresh Prince but I remember him as a trouble-causing secret agent. This song was a huge part of my childhood years, running around the house imitating all of the dance moves from the music video was a blast – and still is – as a kid. This song definitely goes down in history as a classic in my book. Even though I know this song is amazing, I am honestly hoping the Men In Black can make everyone forget I ever admitted to this.

Song: “Thong Song”

Artist: Sisqo

Album: “Unleash The Dragon”

Genre: R&B

Alex says: As a kid in the ’90s, I am pretty sure I humiliated my parents as I yelled ‘let me see that thong’ during errands and family parties. Now, I embarrass my friends by constantly demanding this song everywhere we go. I want to hear it at the club, birthday parties and the bar but I don’t care. It is catchy and I cannot help but laugh and want to dance when I hear this song. This may be the anthem for those creeps you just can’t seem to get away from on a girls’ night out, but that won’t stop me from getting my groove on.

Song: “Loca people”

Artist: Sak Noel

Album: “Loca people”

Genre: House/dance

Elizabeth says: The minimal lyrics have tremendous humor, specifically at the beginning. A tourist “sings” about her experience and culture shock in Barcelona, Spain, where the Spanish constantly enjoy the nightlife. The music video is poorly directed but gives the song humor on another level. The song repeatedly says, “All day, all night,” Spanish words, including “Viva la fiesta, viva la noche” and “What the f—?!” But this song could add to a perfect playlist for a workout or road trip.

Song: “Miss Independent”

Artist: Kelly Clarkson

Album: “Thankful”

Genre: Pop

Janice says: As much as I shouldn’t still be ashamed of my childhood obsession with Kelly Clarkson, I am, because my past love for her deemed borderline freakish to other kids. Now – unless I’m with my childhood best friend who is still Kelly-fied – I hold these tunes under my breath in agony wishing I could embarrassingly hash them out like I did when I was 12. “Miss Independent” is the very first song I learned all the words to, so it has a special place in my weird fan-girl heart.
