Rowing opens season with strong showing

Sacramento State hosted the women’s rowing season-opener Saturday morning on Lake Natoma where the Hornets placed first in five of the seven races.

Varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, varsity four and varsity four B raced to a first place finish while cox 4 came in third and novice four came in second behind Saint Mary’s by .9 seconds.

Captain Sarah Pivonka rowed in the varsity eight and varsity four winning boats and acted as a coxswain in the cox 4 race in which they came in behind Humboldt State A and Cal Lightweights.

The second varsity eight made up of Socheata Guimond, Alexandra Santella, Erika Busch, Alexus Higa, Hannah Silberberg, Tess Heidig, Rosie Kloh, Ana Fletcher and Pam Kline beat second place Humboldt State by 20 seconds with a time of 6:59.9 and UC San Diego by 50.4 seconds who recorded a time of 7:50.5.

Novice eight beat out six other teams and had over a one-minute lead from last place.

The novice eight lineup consisted of freshmen Maggie Liss, Kim Gross, Desiree Drab Munoz, Katie Koeher, Kim Gollmyer and juniors Kloey Glass, Yesenia Miranda, Andrea Mueller and Tawnya Curfman.

Humboldt State was a big contender for Sac State in this regatta. The Jacks placed first in the cox 4 and within the top three in all seven races.

There were 15 other rowers who helped at least two boats throughout this regatta.

Sac State women’s rowing will be out on Lake Natoma hosting San Diego State and rival UC Davis Saturday at 8 a.m.
