The Sacramento State men’s tennis team split a doubleheader Saturday, winning its Big Sky Conference opener against Weber State in the morning, but falling to Saint Mary’s in the afternoon.

The Hornets 6-1 win against Weber State at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club was also the team’s first victory of the season.

Sac State would win all six single matches, including five in straight sets, after losing the doubles point.

Aliaksandr Malko’s 7-5, 6-2 victory over Weber State’s Simon Unger clinched the win at the No. 1 spot. Sean Kolar breezed past his opponent in convincing fashion with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3.

Following the victory, the Hornets packed their bags and traveled to Moraga, Calif., to face Saint Mary’s.

The No. 65 Gaels showed their dominance on the court by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim a early 1-0 lead over Sac State.

Saint Mary’s dominance continued in singles play, winning five of the six matches. The Hornets only victory came from Marek Marksoo who defeated the Gaels’ Seif El Sherbini, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5. Jonathan Hultkrantz and Roy Brandys forced a third set for Sac State before losing their matches.

Sac State looks to bounce back on short rest to play against UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
