Sacramento State students build their own “house of style”

From plaid to denim, from leather to snakeskin, fall fashion is in full swing. So what will many students be seen wearing this fall?

Denim will be in for both guys and girls this fall, according to Katie Thomas, the manager of the TBD (To Be Determined Department) of Nordstrom, where she has to keep track of upcoming trends.

“Popular colors for men this fall are various shades of brown, eggplant, artichoke green, and crimson red,” Thomas said.

“Young men from both Sac State and Davis seem to be interested in a more preppy but still casual look, wearing anything from polo shirts and wool sweaters to long sleeve graphic shirts and the ever popular hooded sweatshirt,” said Amanda Schramm, an Abercrombie and Fitch manager.

“For women, you?ll be seeing a lot of plaid and leather. From jackets to skirts to pants, you?ll be seeing a lot of leather,” Thomas said.

According to Thomas, knee-high boots are making a comeback as well as opaque and sheer nylons.

“Even bright colors such as hot pink will be popular in nylons,” Thomas said.

For a more casual yet popular look, the “sexy prep”at Abercrombie and Fitch is “corduroy skirts with a sexy slit up the front, length form-fitting shirts and no-waist jeans that reveal a little more skin,” said Schramm.

Creating sex appeal is a basic component in fashioning clothes.

But on the other hand, the threads must also look relaxed and convenient, according to computer science major, Adrina Bryant.

“I go for comfort and uniqueness when I shop for clothes,” Bryant said. “It’s how I create my own style.”

Realistically, some of the underclassmen on campus are focused on the collegiate look this fall.

As for Kinya Claiborne, a junior in communications, she said she likes that ‘collegiate look,’ too. Macy’s, Nordstrom and Express are her favorite clothing outlet.

In retrospect, Claiborne likes the fact that the style of clothing can be “recycled.” She learned to model clothes after a valuable person in her life.

“I still like to wear platform shoes, bellbottoms and capri pants,” she said. “I like to bring back the style of clothing my mom used to wear.”
